Student-Facing
Leveled Article
To accommodate different reading levels or lesson objectives, I reconfigure authentically published news articles. The graphic design and page layout invites students to practice navigating headings, paragraphs, imagery, and hyperlinks common to online news sources. On each page, key vocabulary words consistent across the original and leveled versions are depicted visually.
The following example is pulled from a middle school ELA lesson for multilingual learners on equitable urban planning. Here, I have rewritten the same article for two different levels. Regardless of perceived reading levels, all students engage with rigorous materials and develop the language to describe lived realities and advocate for environmental justice.
