Serving as a professional learning specialist, I provided training to orient middle school ELA teachers to their new curriculum and prepare them for success in the upcoming school year. Firm in my background in the science of reading and middle school pedagogy, I came to each session prepared to meet teachers where they were and build on their knowledge and passion to create excitement and build competence.
Reviewed the client's curriculum materials to familiarize myself with the scope, sequence, and proprietary online platform.
Internalized the client's teacher-onboarding materials including slide decks, model lessons, sample scripting, and suggested activities.
Personalized the modules by inserting relevant examples from my own teaching experience and enriching the pedagogical background with my expertise in the science of reading.
Participated in online and in-person training exercises to demonstrate fidelity to the client's training goals and tone.
Maintained high energy, informative online and in-person training sessions with as few as 1 and as many as 8 participants.
Modeled the curriculum by situating participants as students and engaging them in a lesson that exemplified a typical lesson-flow while demonstrating the students' perspective of the platform.
Led participants through an exploration of the teacher's platform and aided them in starting lessons, assigning tasks, entering grades, and interpreting student data.
Answered participant questions both during and after training sessions to ensure that teachers left the sessions feeling both prepared and supported.
In each session, I positioned teachers as professionals who possess a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Both the three-hour remote sessions and full-day in-person trainings presented opportunities for me to bring in my own expertise in the science of reading and multilingual learner education to build investment in the client's program. With high energy, depth of knowledge, and ample opportunities for participation, my training sessions consistently received high survey scores.
